N. Christopher Rigney’s  primary focus is on the underlying human experience. The stories and presentations may differ from work to work; however the ideas should be grasped across language and cultural barriers. This perspective comes from Rigney’s unique family situation having been an American growing up traveling and living throughout Europe away from traditional family all the while having six grandparents one of whom was Japanese. Throughout his experiences Rigney has encountered many situations where understanding through language was just a series of mishaps and stumbles. However pictures and basic human experiences are shared and understood. Rigney works from this point.

Old masters and contemporary realism have heavy influenced the pursuit of an art training through apprenticeships and ateliers. This is quite possibly since these styles of work were ever present, from small local museums in Europe to the village churches. The works can often time fluctuate between Odd Nerdrum, Antonio Lopez Garcia, and Balthus.

Rigney’s figurative work is done from a live model that develops over the course of the relationship with the model. While an idea may spur the beginning of a concept, his work is allowed to change and develop into what best expresses the underlying emotions and experiences. Time is an essential element in this way of working. Allowing time to keep stripping back the un-necessary and removing the clutter is essential.
